Old-Growth lecture and hike with Dr. David Mladenoff

August 14 @ 7:00 pm - August 15 @ 7:00 pm

Dr. David Mladenoff will present a program on the ecology and management of old-growth forests on Tuesday, August 14, at 7 p.m. in the Hurley High School auditorium.

Mladenoff, a native of Hurley, is professor in forest and landscape ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He’s worked in northern forest systems of the Lake States for over 30 years concentrating on the effects of natural and historical disturbance, management, and climate change on forest ecosystems and old-growth forests. In 2011 he was named a Distinguished Ecologist by the US Landscape Ecology Society. He is an author on over 150 publications, co-editor of two books, and has been invited to present lectures on his work throughout North America and other countries.

The next morning, Wednesday, August 15, Dr. Mladenoff will lead a hike in the Frog Lake and Pines State Natural Area from 9 – 11:30 a.m. Frog Lake and Pines, located on Hwy. 47 0.6 miles south of the crossroads of Manitowish, is one of the best old pine sites left in Wisconsin and lies within the 6,265-acre Manitowish River Wild Resource Area. The easy-going hike will be about two miles out-and-back with lots of discussion along the way.

Both programs are sponsored by ICORE (Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts) and are free to the public.
